Things to KNOW About Vitamin E:

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin, meaning it's absorbed along with dietary fat and can be stored in the liver and fatty tissues for later use. Consuming foods high in vitamin E along with some dietary fat will increase the absorption of vitamin E.

There are two types of vitamin E:

  • d-alpha-tocopherol - the natural form found in whole foods
  • dl-alpha-tocopherol - the synthetic form found in most supplements and fortified foods
  • The natural form of vitamin E is more bio-available to your body than the synthetic form. For this reason, the recommended daily allowance (RDA) is higher for synthetic vitamin E than for natural vitamin E.

Antioxidants such as vitamin E have the potential to slow down cognitive decline since these fat soluble vitamins can readily enter the fatty brain and exert their antioxidant properties. Clinical studies have shown that vitamin E together with vitamin C may prevent or slow down the development of Alzheimer's disease.
